At Greensboro Montessori School, we believe in empowering students to be independent and responsible learners. We believe children can and should actively construct who and what they are as they unleash their full potential; music is one way they do that. And we believe the language of musical expression and exploration is a valuable part of that journey.
We are seeking a part-time music ensemble teacher for our Upper School program (fourth through ninth grades). Our new hire will teach Upper School ensemble classes at the end of the school day (roughly 2-3:15 p.m.) and then transition to teaching after-school private lessons (roughly 3:30-5:30 p.m.) in a variety of musical instruments (preferably strings, such as guitar, ukulele, bass, etc.). We are open to discussion whether our new hire is employed by us for the private lessons, or if you remain an independent teacher with complimentary access to our teaching space. Performing arts or theatrical work may also weave into the position, depending on the new hire and emerging needs of the program. Teaching music in our summer camps is also a possibility, if desired.
Greensboro Montessori School already has a strong music program, bolstered by one long-time Upper School faculty who is stepping away from our School next year and by our current world music faculty who teaches toddler through fifth grades. Our new hire will share our music teaching space on the School’s stage with our current music teacher. We already offer after-school private lessons in piano, so we are looking to branch out into other instrument or voice offerings for private lessons after school. For the Upper School music class, our new hire will lead an ensemble that will play both for themselves and at various school experiences or other gigs within the community. Sometimes students will cover current songs, and sometimes they will work to write their own. Sometimes they’ll bring in their own musical talent and instruments to support the ensemble, and sometimes you will be teaching them various instruments, music theory, and skills.
Our ideal hire and addition to our teaching community will have:
- Both a strong commitment to excellence, while also having joy in all that you do.
- Varied musical and instrumental skills.
- Experience teaching music and leading an ensemble with adolescent and preadolescent students.
- An interest in offering private, after-school music lessons.
- A desire to listen and work with the students’ musical intuition and intentions – as a Montessori school, we are not a heavy top-down or teacher-centered learning community.
- Teaching values that align with Montessori – while Montessori experience is not required, value alignment is.
This part-time position is a 10-month position which begins in August 2019 and follows the School’s academic calendar. Music instruction during summer months is also a possibility, if desired. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. If you want to come learn and make some music with us, please email a cover letter and résumé to Heather Goggin, our director of human resources. Interviews are currently underway.
