Junior High Science Teacher
Full-Time Position for the 2026-27 Academic School Year

At Greensboro Montessori School, we believe our adolescent students are full of potential, capability, and a desire to do “big work.” They are powerful and curious individuals. Yes, they question, push boundaries, wrestle with identity, and can be “difficult” – but in the right environment, they are remarkably capable.
We are fortunate to have that kind of environment – the program, resources, and team – to guide and inspire our adolescents to grow into their best selves. With access to two activity buses, a flexible and open work cycle, a committed and experienced Junior High team, a 38-acre satellite Land Campus for overnights and day trips focused on environmental education and community building, our program extends well beyond the classroom. Students also benefit from a Student Support Center, a commercial-grade teaching kitchen, a fall ecology trip to the coast, and a spring trip to either Arizona or Costa Rica.
We care deeply about this program and about our adolescents. We want them to know they belong here and to know their work and presence is invaluable to our community. With approximately 35 seventh and eighth grade students and a team of three full-time faculty, we believe our Montessori program offers what adolescents truly need. As one of our beloved teammates steps away from full-time work, we are both saddened and energized by the opportunity to find the right person to join our team and our School, and most importantly, to serve our students.
Responsibilities
The ideal candidate demonstrates wisdom, dedication, integrity, and sound judgment, along with a commitment to self-reflection and continuous growth. We seek an educator with a strong understanding of Montessori principles, a deep knowledge of adolescent development, and the ability to bring multiple scientific disciplines to life. This full-time Junior High faculty position includes the following responsibilities.
Science Instruction. Bring scientific habits of mind, practices, and curiosity to life in both science classes (either one-hour daily classes or two-hour block formats) and across the broader program. Curriculum should be informed by Montessori principles and align with N.C, state standards, while allowing flexibility for both the teacher and student to follow the child and adjust the curriculum as makes sense. An existing curriculum provides a strong foundation, with opportunity for the teacher to bring their own approach and expertise. Instruction should be project-based and hands-on, helping students see themselves as scientists (~60%)
Junior High Team. General responsibilities being part of the team: being an advisor, lunch and recess duties, collaborative projects, and helping with things like seminar topics, campus service work, or partnership with our Student Support Center to support struggling students. Support student events and functions; option to coach sports teams; part of the School’s professional community. (~20%)
Off-Campus and Land Studies. Support and lead off-campus learning experiences, including regular trips to our 38-acre Land Campus (approximately 25 minutes away), with a mix of day trips and overnight stays. Work at the Land Campus integrates “work of the hand” (physical labor), “work of the heart” (community building), and “work of the head” (environmental, biological, and physical sciences). For example, students may design and prototype projects in class (last month it was catapults) then build and test them on-site. The Land Campus includes 28 acres protected by the Piedmont Land Conservancy, a 32-bed retreat center, creek within the Haw River watershed, barn workshop, student-built pavilion, gardens, and chickens. This role also supports planning and leading fall and spring overnight trips. (~20%)
Leadership Potential. Depending on the applicant and other factors, there is also space and potential for a division leadership position to be incorporated into the role.
