Primary/Early Childhood Assistant Teacher

Full-Time Position for the 2024-25 Academic School Year

At Greensboro Montessori School, we believe our youngest students are filled with potential, with ability and capability, and with the desire to do “big work.” Rather than see them as “cute” (which is not a favorite word of ours), we choose to see our students as powerful and curious humans. We work hard to nurture and challenge them as they develop into their best selves. Along the way, we grow to admire our students, we laugh, and we take great pride in our work.

Do you share this outlook and these beliefs? We are currently seeking a new assistant teacher for our 2024-25 school year to support our four Primary classrooms, which include a three-year cycle of early childhood and kindergarten (3-year-old through 6-year-old) students.

The right candidate should possess flexibility, adaptability, attention to detail, strong interpersonal communication skills, and self-motivation. This individual would fill a new role of an additional “floater” assistant that would support all four of our Primary classrooms. We seek individuals with a clear understanding of Montessori ideals, deep knowledge of the development of children, and classroom management and communication skills that nurture self-discipline, order, and confidence in young students.This candidate would be flexible and eager to step in to help when and where needed within the primary team. With the depth and skill of our current team as well as potential future growth opportunities, we are open to applicants who are new to Montessori and who already have Montessori experience. The ideal candidate would also be open to and excited for potential future growth into a lead teacher role.

Greensboro Montessori School is a 50-year-old, toddler-to-junior-high, AMS- and SAIS-accredited, 270-student independent school. Each Primary classroom has 22 students, one Montessori-trained lead teacher, one assistant teacher (while not required, some of our assistant teachers are also Montessori trained), and a full set of Montessori materials. We also have two additional classrooms for 3-year-olds after lunch and an after-school program with additional faculty support.

Most important to us is that our new teammate:

  • Uses respectful language and a positive guidance approach with students;
  • Is a team player who can flexibly share spaces and responsibilities;
  • Can give children space to safely make and learn from their mistakes;
  • Works with the full community of students, teachers, families and administrators, in articulating and maintaining the integrity and scope of our Montessori program;
  • Is attentive to and responsible for the myriad details involved in a school environment;
  • Finds daily joy in their work.

Education and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, elementary education or a related discipline is required.
  • Experience working in a child-centered early childhood program is required.
  • Experience in a Montessori classroom environment is preferred.
  • A commitment to equity and inclusion is required.

This is a 10-month, full-time position. Compensation is commensurate with experience, and working in our summer camp is a welcome addition that could potentially make it similar to a 12-month role. If you think you have what we’re looking for, we would love to hear from you. Please email a cover letter and résumé to Ashley Daniels, director of human resources, at [email protected].
