Primary/Early Childhood Teacher (Lead or Assistant)

Full-Time Position for the 2026-27 Academic School Year

At Greensboro Montessori School, we believe our youngest students are filled with potential, with ability and capability, and with the desire to do “big work.” We choose to see our students as powerful and curious humans. Our Montessori materials and environment help guide children to develop independence in their learning and work, rather than having an adult tell them what to do or what to think.

With the retirement of one of our long-term faculty, we are seeking a 10-month, full-time teacher to join the Primary team for the 2026-27 school year. In Montessori classrooms, there is a three-year cycle. We call our early childhood division “Primary.” We have four Primary classrooms, each with 22 to 24 students ages 3 to 6 years old (including kindergarten), a lead and assistant teacher. Depending on the particular applicant, we are open to the new teammate being a lead teacher or an assistant teacher.

  • LEAD teachers are responsible for implementing all parts of our Montessori curriculum, for partnering with families to keep them informed of student progress, for guiding the assistant teacher, and coordinating with the other lead teachers and division leader to support the overall division. A MACTE-approved Montessori Credential is required for lead teachers. Compensation is commensurate with years in the classroom and degrees (with additional compensation available for working summer camp).
  • ASSISTANT teachers are responsible for supporting the entire classroom and students, for working with individual students, and for helping the lead teacher keep their focus on giving lessons to students. Some assistant teachers prefer to stay as assistant teachers and some prefer to consider growing into a lead teacher role. A bachelor's degree and experience working with young children in a school setting is required. Compensation is commensurate with years in the classroom and degrees (with additional compensation available for working summer camp).

The right candidate for either role should demonstrate wisdom, integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to self-reflection, and growth.

Qualities and Attributes (both roles):

  • Uses respectful language and a positive guidance approach with students.
  • Can give children space to safely make and learn from their mistakes.
  • Is a team player who can flexibly share spaces and responsibilities.
  • Works with the full community of students, teachers, families, and administrators in articulating and maintaining the integrity and scope of our Montessori program.
  • Is attentive to and responsible for the myriad details involved in a school environment.
  • Finds daily joy in their work.

Qualifications:

  • Lead Teacher:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood education or a related field; master’s degree welcomed.
    • MACTE-approved Primary Montessori Credential.
    • Classroom experience at a Montessori school.
  • Assistant Teacher:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
    • Experience working in a child-centered early childhood program is required.
  • Non-negotiable for both roles: commitment to equity and inclusion; passion for inspiring students; collaborative; excellent communication skills; an open and flexible mindset.
  • Spanish speaking skills are a plus.

This is a 10-month, full-time position, and working in our summer camp is a welcome addition that could potentially make it similar to a 12-month role. If you think you have what we’re looking for, we would love to hear from you. Please email a cover letter and résumé to Ashley Daniels, director of human resources, at [email protected]. Please indicate if you are applying to the lead or assistant teacher position.
